Experimental Investigation of Dropshaft Hydraulics: Two-phase Flow and Acoustics

نویسنده

  • Hubert CHANSON
چکیده

A dropshaft is an energy dissipator connecting two channels with different invert elevations. Detailed air-water flow and acoustic measurements were conducted in a prototype dropshaft under controlled flow conditions, and complemented by a 1:3.1 scale model study. Experimental observations showed three flow regimes with distinct acoustic signatures. Strong flow aeration was recorded in two flow regimes. Differences between model and prototype results document some limitation of a Froude similitude for studies of air entrainment, residence times and mass transfer in dropshaft.

Numerical simulation of rectangular dropshafts using a Volume-of-Fluid (VoF) technique

This paper focuses on the implementation, validation and exploitation of a vertical dropshaft flow operation using the commercial VOF-based Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code, FLOW-3D ® . Using the experimental data of Chanson (2002), the package was used to simulate the flow patterns in a rectangular dropshaft with plunge-flow pattern. Both k−ε and k−ε RNG turbulence closures were tested ...

An experimental study of Roman dropshaft hydraulics Une etude experimentale de l’hydraulique des puits de rupture romains

In Roman aqueducts, series of vertical dropshafts were used to dissipate the kinetic energy of the flow : i.e., the dropshaft cascades. A re-analysis of Roman dropshaft hydraulics is conducted with physical model tests. Three basic flow patterns are observed. The results demonstrate that the vertical dropshafts could be very efficient energy dissipators and re-oxygenation structures, under appr...

Clustering Process and Interfacial Area Analysis in a Large-size Dropshaft

Dropshafts are commonly used in sewers and stormwater channels as energy dissipator systems. Since recent effort has been devoted to characterize dropshaft hydraulics and air-water flow properties, and the present paper develops an analysis of the bubble clustering process using new experimental data collected in a large-size facility. The results highlight some significant patterns in clusters...

Assessment of Turbulent Models in Computation of Strongly Curved Open Channel Flows

Several rigorous turbulent models have been developed in the past years and it can be seen that more research is needed to reach a better understanding of their generality and precision by verifying their applications for distinct hydraulic phenomena; under certain assumptions. This survey evaluates the performance of Standard k-ε, Realizable k-ε, RNG k-ε, k-ω and RSM models in predicting flow ...

Numerical investigation of upward air-water annular, slug and bubbly flow regimes

In this paper, numerical investigation of upward two phase flow of air-water has been studied. Different conditions of flow regimes including annular, wispy annular, slug, churn and bubbly are simulated based on Hewitt and Roberts map, and a good agreement between the experimental data of the map and the numerical simulation has been observed. Accordingly, a proper CFD model in CFD software of ...
